VI. The Enochian System
Or "The Angelic Language"
Of Dr. John Dee and Edward Kelley

The Enochian system is one of the most widely touted and least well understood elements of the Golden Dawn System.  The following pages provide a general outline for Enochian Magic.

I. Pronouncing Enochian

Enochian consonants pick up the sound of the vowel if there is a vowel following them. Thus TIA is pronounced as a two syllable word - Tee-ah.  The consonant T and the vowel I blend to make the Tee, but the vowel A stands alone and is given its pronunciation of "ah"

Because you can't really make a consonant sound without a terminal vowel (oriental languages aside), consonants that don't have a vowel after them get an arbitrary vowel sound.  If you're familiar with Hebrew you're already familiar with this concept - the tetragrammaton YHWH is pronounced Yod-Heh-Vau-Heh, or some similar arrangement (depending on dialect, etc.)  I've provided a chart which gives what appear to be the standard terminal values when the consonant occurs without a vowel.

The Enochian word VMPLIF is prounounced Vah-mee-pay-lee-eff.   V, M, and P aren't followed by vowles, but the L is followed by I, and becomes one syllable - lee.  The F doesn't have a vowel and so stands alone.

Enochian is meant to be "vibrated"- chanted or almost sung.  If you've ever heard a psalm being sung, that's the general tone.

In general, when you have to pronounce Enochian during the game, it will be written out in syllabic form, for easy reading.

II. The Enochian System Simplified

There are Several functional elements to the Enochian system.
The Elemental Tablets, the 30 Aethyrs, and the names of the
Holy Sevenfold Table, and the Sigillum Dei Aemuth among them.

A. The Elemental Tablets

There are a lot of additional names for the Elemental Tablets - they are also called the "Great Elemental Watch Towers" for example.

The Element of the Enochian System with the Golden Dawn made the most use of are the "Elemental Tablets," (Dee never specifically attributed them to the Elements).  The Modern O.T.O. also makes extensive use of the Elemental Tablets.  The Tablet System was heavily enlarged by the G.D., and many of its conclusions and attributions are not found in Dee's primary work.

The Elemental Tablet portion of the Enochian system revolves around five tablets - series of squares with Enochian letters in them.  There are four large tablets, 12 squares across by 13 squares down.  These are referred to as the "Elemental Tablets" - there is one each for air, earth, water, and fire.  There is also a smaller tablet called the "Tablet of Union," which is five squares by four squares. The Tablet of Union symbolizes the "fifth element" of "Spirit" (from which we get the word quintessence, by the way).

The Enochian characters on the tablets form patterns that make up the names of various angelic and demonic powers, which can be summoned or invoked.

Each tablet is exactly the same pattern.  We'll break up one tablet, as an example.
