On Thursday, April 30, 1970 President Richard Nixon announces that an “incursion” into Cambodia has been launched by United States combat forces.  Over the weekend spontaneous protests sprung up at college campuses across the United States.On Monday, May 4, 28 Ohio National Guardsmen fire into a crowd of students at Kent State University.   Four students are killed and nine others injured.

The deaths triggered a rush of marches and violent protests throughout America aimed at the actions of the authorities. In the long run, the invasion of Cambodia and the Kent State shootings, more than any other event, would galvanize public opinion against the Vietnam war.

At a prominent University in Washington, D.C., Students and some radical faculty members have seized control of a building as part of a protest against the Kent State killings.
