It is very tempting to write a “history” of the events leading up to the Kent State shootings in 1970. However, we’ve decided not to do that. The fact is that in the days after the Kent State shootings, news about the incident was limited, although there were incisive, in-depth radio and television reports.
We’ve elected, for reasons of tone and accuracy, to present instead the actual news reports available in the days leading up to the Kent State shootings. These reports, or reports very similar to them, are the information that would be available on May 5, 1970. However, we also realize that it may be useful to have a general understanding of the events leading up to the events of April-May 1970
